I was born in Roebank Street, Glasgow on 15 August 1940 and, in 1946, moved with my family to Brechin and, in 1947, to Oathlaw, near Forfar, where I spent my formative years. Thereafter I lived, and worked, in Forfar, Arbroath and Kirriemuir. I married Vi in 1962 and we have a daughter (Jackie) and son (Gary) who both live and work in Edinburgh
I worked for
Barclay, Ross & Hutchison, Forfar, for one year before joining Angus
Constabulary in 1956 as a Police Cadet. In 1959 I was appointed as a
Police Officer and was posted to Arbroath. After attending a three
month training course at Whitburn Training College I was posted to
Kirriemuir. After working for seven years in Kirriemuir I was posted
back to Arbroath. In 1970 I was transferred to plain clothes duties
and was in the criminal investigation department for the rest of my service,
initially in Arbroath and latterly in Forfar. I served with the
regional crime squad for two years and with the drugs squad for seven years.
In 1984 I was promoted to Detective Sergeant and left the Police Service in
1989.
Since 2002 I have been involved with the Angus Glens Hillwalking Festival and the Blairgowrie & East Perthshire Walking Festival working as a guide. In November 2003 the Angus Glens Hillwalking Festival was awarded the tourism award and adjudged by a panel of judges as Angus Ambassador of the year for promoting tourism in Angus. The award ceremony was held in Carnoustie Golf Hotel and was compered by Dougie Donnolly, the well known BBC sports commentator.
I am currently available as a speaker on various topics relating to the Angus glens. Please contact me by email if your group would like a presentation.
