GLEN ISLA

The most westerly of the Angus glens, has, at its head, the amphitheatre of Caenlochan and it is here that the River Isla starts its journey down the glen.   The estate prefer that walkers stick to the Monega path which runs from Tulchan Lodge over by the side of Glas Maol and on to Sron na Gaoithe before finishing in Glen Shee near the ski centre.   If all you want is a low level walk then wander up the glen past Bessie's cairn (which now says "Essie's Cairn") built in 1852 for Lady Elizabeth Londonderry who used to stalk deer in the glen and carry on to the ruined shieling about a mile further on.   A lovely walk at the back end of the year when the stags are roaring on both sides of the glen.

Farther down the glen a high level tarred road leads across to Glen Shee.   Nearby is Mount Blair which is a reasonably easy walk with excellent views from the top but is now spoiled by man-made structures on the summit!

Some fairly low-level walks are available in the Freuchies area while a short distance farther down the glen is the Backwater Dam which, in conjunction with Lintrathen loch, supplies water to parts of Angus and all of Dundee.   There are a couple of walks in this area which will take you over into Glen Prosen
